IES Consulting were commissioned to undertake a thermal comfort study of the proposed development to ascertain the overheating risk against CIBSE TM59.

Key Facts

  • CIBSE TM59 analysis
  • 433 luxury apartments
  • Comprises of 6 – 22 storeys
  • Former Police HQ

Designed by architects, HAUS Collective, Moda Living’s Holland Park development will see Glasgow’s former Strathclyde Police headquarters transformed into a 16-storey development of 433 luxury apartments, designed exclusively for rental. The impressive site will include over 45,000 sq. ft. of on-site amenity space, including communal lounges, health and wellness zones, landscaped roof gardens and indoor/outdoor dining areas.

IES Consulting were commissioned to undertake an internal environmental conditions study of the proposed development to assess the overheating potential of typical occupied rooms against CIBSE TM59.

TM59 is a design methodology used to assess overheating risk in residential buildings using dynamic thermal analysis. It aims to encourage good design that is comfortable, within sensible limits, without being so stringent that it over-promotes the use of mechanical cooling.

Using the IES Virtual Environment (IESVE) software, IES Consulting created a dynamic thermal model based on architectural information and inputs specified in CIBSE TM59, to carry out the calculations and simulations required. Simulations were performed using the latest CIBSE design summer year (DSY) weather files using the DSY1 file most appropriate to the site location for the 2020s, high emission, 50% percentiles scenario. An observational assessment was also carried out to evaluate against CIBSE DSY2 and DSY3 weather files, as well as future weather files (i.e. 2050 or 2080), to develop a heatwave plan.

The results successfully demonstrated compliance with TM59, with the majority of spaces across the development meeting the requirements for all three DSYs.
