London

IES Consulting was commissioned to investigate the feasibility of using natural ventilation in the car parks of blocks A and C of the Aberfeldy New Village buildings in London.

Key Facts

  • DSM (Dynamic Simulation Model) coupled with CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics)
  • Check potential compliance with section 6.18(a) and 6.18(b) of the Approved Document F
  • Several scenarios tested with and without jet fans

DSM (Dynamic Simulation Model) coupled with the CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) model was used in this investigation to check potential compliance with section 6.18(a) and 6.18(b) of the Approved Document F.

Steady state CFD simulations were performed for the two car parks, blocks A and C, of the Aberfeldy New Village to determine the CO concentration levels for normal and peak operation levels. The car parks were modelled as being naturally ventilated. The concentration levels were compared to the requirements of the sections 6.18(a) and 6.18(b) of the Approved Document F.

The consultants also investigated how the carbon monoxide might distribute when cars are inside the car park as per regular use and whether it disperses. Several scenarios were tested including jet fans to remove it more forcefully and then without jet vans to see how the scenario compares and if this was able to be achieved without jet fans.
