IES Consulting provided LEED energy modelling for two new large academy campuses in Qatar at sites in Al Khor and Al Wakra.

IES performed the ASHRAE 90.1 Performance Rating Method assessment for LEED energy credits EAp2 and EAc1 throughout the design stage.

The Al Khor academy (yellow images) at >50,000m2 is to accommodate 2,200 number students and staff. It comprises mainly educational and office areas, with a sports facility (including one Olympic-size swimming pool and one 25m long swimming pool) and laboratories.

The Al Wakra academy (blue images) at >50,000m2 is to accommodate 2,200 number students and staff. It comprises mainly educational and office areas, with a sports facility (including two 25m long swimming pools) and laboratories.

Both academies followed the LEED On-Campus & Multiple Building Certification route whereby two blocks within the campus boundary are pursuing a 30% energy saving to achieve a Gold Certification rating for LEED NC 2009. Both campuses at Al Khor and Al Wakra comprised of a Teaching Block and a Recreational Centre which were registered as seperate LEED projects but served by a common energy centre. IES consolidated the analysis by simulating the block and centre in the same model but then post processing the results to split the energy consumption. This process meant only a single model was needed for each site therefore modelling time and cost could be managed more effectively particularly when considering design changes in respect to data communication and quality assurance.

The HVAC approach for both academies included a solution based on centralised air handling units serving fan coil units into the occupied spaces. Cooling was sourced from solar absorption cooling systems which were designed to be fed from a solar hot water collector array. The absorption chillers being backed-up by electric chillers.
