IES Consulting were appointed to perform dynamic thermal simulations and building regulations compliance for the EPDC at Loughborough University.

Key Facts

  • BREEAM Excellent Rating
  • EPC B
  • EPC Asset Rating 38
  • EPC Level 5

IES Consulting provided energy modelling services for the East Park Design Centre at Loughborough University. The modelling included for the detailed architectural solar shading arrangement which was a mix of brise-soleil, pre-defined fins and also a serrated overlap.

The project assessed the potential of overheating within the building by performing dynamic simulations. Included in the analysis were the natural and mixed mode ventilation configurations, whcih employed a stack ventialtion configuration along with occupant controlled openable windows.  Applying the settings with the selected weather data the model succesfully demonstrated an expectance that no space within the building exceeded 28C whilst occupied, ensuring comfort for all staff and students.

A daylighting analysis was performed to assess the benefit of natural light to the teaching spaces. The top floor layout included high level rooflights to provide additional daylight and this was assessed against a daylight factor calculation.

Additionally the Building Regulations Part L and EPC for the new build design were completed for compliance purposes.
