STARGATE

SusTainable AiRports, the Green heArT of Europe

Project Summary

STARGATE’s mission is to make aviation and airports greener and more sustainable. A consortium of 21 partners, including Brussels Airport and other recognised organisations will be working for the next five years on approximately 30 projects mainly focusing on three areas:

  • a further decarbonisation of the airport operations,
  • improving the local environmental quality and
  • improving the modal split.

By developing, testing and deploying a set of innovative solutions we, together with our partners, aim to make airports’ ecosystems significantly more sustainable with one important goal: to decarbonise by 2035.
The STARGATE vision is to be a source of inspiration to other airports in Europe and the world.

IES' Role

IES’ main role in the project is the development and coordination of the Digital Twin ecosystem for airports, with the ICL Performance Digital Twin at the core. This will be used to create a physics based exact virtual replica of the Lighthouse Airport (Brussels) to guide decarbonisation efforts. The terminal model will also be linked to transport flows, and include airport processes, terminal operations, community energy production and supply and emissions management. The Digital Twin will allow us to baseline the current performance of the airport and will be used as an accurate and reliable source to evaluate and monitor future decarbonisation scenarios. This approach will be replicated in the project’s Fellow Airports.
