Glasgow Caledonian University has been teaching the IES Virtual Environment (IESVE) to its Building Service Engineer students for around 14 years. Being the leading tool used in industry and its constant development to stay up to date with industry requirements, makes IESVE the preferred teaching tool for the university.

Key Facts

  • IESVE taught as part of the Building Services Engineering courses
  • Valued as leading industry tool and helps students progress their careers
  • GCU emphasise to its students the huge role that building simulation tools such as IESVE has to play in decarbonisation

The IESVE is taught at different levels throughout the Building Services Engineering courses at Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU). From basic compliance modelling to sustainable design modelling in the under graduate course, to more detailed analysis using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and modelling natural ventilation within the IESVE for the Post Graduate and Masters courses.

Many of the students already work in industry and are aware of the IESVE. They find value in learning it as part of their degree, and MSc courses as it benefits them professionally and helps them to progress their careers.

“For students that study part-time on a day release basis from industry, learning the IESVE is particularly useful as they can apply their learning to what they are doing at work. For their final project, many of these students take a real-world challenge they have within their employment context and use the IESVE to model and overcome.

The feedback we receive from students on learning and using the IESVE is really positive as it is a highly recognised industry tool which is also relatively user-friendly and therefore makes it
easy for students to follow and demonstrate what they are trying to achieve.”

In the midst of a global climate emergency, the need to decarbonise our built environment has never been more crucial. As part of its Building Engineering Services courses, GCU emphasise to its students the huge role that building simulation tools such as IESVE has to play in this.

“We use the IESVE for the energy efficiency design module which is looking at decarbonising and optimising buildings; it’s a very powerful tool that students can use to look at different energy efficient options. Carbon impact and the sustainability of buildings is very much what the industry is about and therefore that’s very much what we’re about teaching.”
Mark Phillipson, Senior Lecturer in Building Services Engineering at Glasgow Caledonian University
