IES Digital Twin Recognised as Leading Climate Tech for a Zero Carbon Built Environment

IES has been recognised by top Scottish national press and a consortium of key industry organisations as a leading climate tech company, with its Digital Twin solutions being a crucial component to combatting the worlds climate crisis.

In a recent Herald Scotland article, How Scottish 'digital twin' technology can help build a sustainable future for all, IES founder and CEO, Don McLean explains how every building, community and city can make use of IES 'digital twin' technology to help achieve Net Zero by 2045.

Another article in the Herald’s Business HQ magazine, The Smart Solution, features an interview with Chief Digital Twin Product Manager, Ruggiero Guida who talks about why very few cities and companies are succeeding with their carbon reduction initiatives and the importance of having the correct sophisticated tools to navigate the complex challenges of reaching net-zero.

The company also contributed to and features in a recent report by SCDI, BT, ScotlandIS, and the Royal Society of Edinburgh: Innovation Critical: Scotland’s Net Zero Mission and Climate Tech Opportunity.

Over the next few months the eyes of the world will be turning to the City of Glasgow as it prepares to host the ‘generation defining’ COP26 Summit. The city will be a flood with political leaders, climate scientists and activists, business leaders, journalists, and many more from all over the globe.

They will all be eagerly anticipating the outcomes of the summit and hoping for an assertive action plan that shows HOW we meet ambitious zero carbon targets and prevent truly disastrous climate change. This year’s conference must be about tangible proven solutions to combat the climate crisis. Nothing less will do. There isn’t time.

Buildings and cities are currently one of the single greatest contributors to energy use and related carbon emissions worldwide. They therefore present one of the greatest opportunities for decarbonisation.

However, a decarbonised built environment can only be achieved with the support of appropriate analytical tools. Otherwise, decisions will be based on ill-informed assumptions, running the risk of making mistakes which will cause irreversible damage, or be too costly to rectify, in the long-term.

Over the last 27 years, IES’ core Virtual Environment (IESVE) software, which facilitates the energy efficient design of individual buildings, has been used to design over 1 million buildings across the globe, helping prevent the need for over 36 power stations to be built (and counting).

The firm is now making an even greater impact. It’s Digital Twin technology suite – the Intelligent Communities Lifecycle (ICL) – has been designed to facilitate decarbonisation across the entire lifecycle of the built environment – supporting citizens, companies, campuses, communities, cities and even whole countries.

Using a unique combination of physics-based simulation, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, the ICL makes it possible to create a digital twin (a 1:1 virtual replica) of any community/group of buildings to simulate their lifecycle and plan the right solutions now and into the future.

Making it possible to:

·       Simulate the energy performance of multiple buildings and their energy networks

·       Assess the energy, carbon, cost and socio-economic impacts of community-wide solutions, renewables and Net Zero strategies, prior to implementation

·       Inform Net Zero policies

·       Monitor energy and carbon performance over time

·       Engage, educate and inspire citizens to make intelligent energy choices

This is exactly the type of innovation the world desperately needs to tackle climate change head on.

Since the launch of the ICL Digital Twin in April 2019, the technology has gained huge momentum as the pathway to a net-zero built environment and has been recognised by multiple leading organisations, governments and universities as a key tool to meeting their net-zero targets. This includes SSE, John Lewis, the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, Stirling Council, University of Glasgow, Heriot-Watt University, Nanyang Technological University, and many more examples which you can read more about via the IES website’s case studies section.

As the world looks to its leaders at COP in Glasgow for solutions this November it doesn’t have to look very far. A global solution to the climate crisis sits just a few miles from the conference venue at IES headquarters.
