  • Won 2011 IDI Award for Best Exhibition Design

The Ireland Pavilion at Expo 2010 Shanghai China presents Chinese visitors with a vision of Ireland as a country. Designed by OPW – Architectural Services, the pavillion occupies a site of 3,000 sqm and contains 13 galleries, a temporary exhibition centre, a courtyard performance plaza and a hospitality suite for business and promotional use. The pavilion's theme symbolised the relationship between urban and nature under the title "Urban Space and the Evolution of Urban Life Style".

IES Consulting performed energy modeling to identify potential design challenges in the Shanghai climate. Using a simulation approach to this challenge IES Consulting worked to optimise the HVAC design and quantify the expected comfort conditions within the pavilion. The building design features include a green roof, a performance glazing system to enhance solar shading protection and natural ventilation.

The Ireland Pavilion has been successful in receiving a number of awards including:

  • Best Exhibition Design at the prestigious 2011 IDI Awards (Institute of Designers of Ireland).
  • BIE (International Exhibitions Bureau) Bronze Medal for ‘Theme Development’ by Jean-Pierre Lafon the President of BIE, the World EXPO co- ordinating body.
  • One of only four pavilions out of 250 to receive a "Model Pavilion" award from the Chinese authorities.
