Software Engineer (Building Physics and Energy Simulation)

Glasgow (home-working initially)

This role will be temporarily homebased due to COVID-19. Then subsequently working from our Glasgow office with hybrid and flexible working options available.

The Opportunity

The successful candidate will join a team developing state-of-the art code for advanced building physics simulation. The team employs mathematical modelling techniques to analyse heat transfer mechanisms, air conditioning, renewable energy systems, natural ventilation, lighting, thermal comfort, energy consumption, carbon emissions and climate, and assess building performance against regulatory codes and standards in different countries.

The Candidate

Essential skills:

  • A degree in physics, engineering, computing or a related scientific discipline.
  • Experience of designing and developing scientific software in C++, Fortran or other high performance language.
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, self-motivated team player.
  • Able to convert complex technical requirements into a plan of work for implementation within an existing application.
  • Able to specify tests to verify new code is robust and working as intended.
  • Enthusiasm for good software design combined with a desire to write clean code.
  • Able to conduct research into unfamiliar technologies or numerical models and devise approaches that will allow these to be included in the simulation engine.

Desirable skills:

  • Experience of writing scientific code in a commercial environment.
  • Experience of mechanical engineering, HVAC plant models, control systems or building engineering physics.
  • Experience of working as part of an Agile team.
  • Knowledge of a version control tools, ideally Perforce.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Visual Studio.
