IES has developed a cloud-based service that allows users to upload models to a server (INDY run by EPCC in Edinburgh) so that SunCast solar shading calculations can be performed much faster than would be capable on a standard local user machine.
This quick and cost-effective resource offers VE users with current SunCast licences huge advantages, allowing them to expand the number of additional scenarios studied and to introduce additional city scale geometry that may have previously been left out of the modelled environment. Solar shading calculations of large and complex buildings with multiple scenarios can be run simultaneously, giving users the freedom to run other elements of the VE.
The calculations can be performed for any variant model in VE (ASHRAE 90.1 Baseline orientations, UK Part L2 Notional etc) as well as for Real Building models. The user is required to generate the up to date models in VE and then export them from the SunCast application before uploading to the Cloud for the calculations to be run. When complete the shading file can be downloaded from the Cloud and copied back into the project folder so that the results can be reviewed in SunCast and used in Apache simulations.
