IES provided energy and environmental modelling services for the Centre for Mechanochemical Cell Biology (CMCB) at the University of Warwick across two stages of the building's design and construction. IES modelled the following aspects on this BREEAM Excellent research facility whose mission is to discover the molecular and cellular mechanisms driving active self-organisation in living systems.
Energy & Overheating:
The design incorporated high performance glass, night purge cooling vents for mixed-mode ventilation plus the prominent architectural feature of solar shading fins which turn their orientation from horizontal to vertical as they corner the building in response to the sun angle. These features played a key part in the building performance which IES evaluated for BREEAM through both an overheating study for occupant comfort and an energy use evaluation. Alongside this IES Consulting provided the Part L and EPC compliance calculations including the impact of a solar PV system.
IES provided daylight factor calculations toward the BREEAM daylighting credit. IES model captured the effect of the architectural solar shading form in conjunction with the assessed glass types.
As the building design included a flue extract system it was necessary to evaluate any potential pollutant contamination to the local environment due to the exhaust content. The pollutant study assessed the distribution of the flue exhaust across the local university site for a range of wind speeds and orientations, all working to feedback on the pollutant concentration and identifying if acceptable levels were achieved at nearby buildings.
